Nanisivik Wharf, Nunavut

In 2008, Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) was called upon to evaluate the condition of the Nanisivik wharf for the Department of National Defence and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The inspection and structural analysis of the structure give the Ministries the opportunity to know the state of the structure at various stages in its lifetime. SPG has been mandated to undertake this study.
According to the needs and priorities of the Ministry, this mandate consists of a complete site inspection, land and bathymetric surveys and structural analysis for the existing Nanisivik Wharf site, Baffin Island, Nunavut. The main focus was the maritime portion of the site including the emerged vertical parts and the structure’s components (bollards, guardrails, mechanical equipments, etc.). The first objective is to maintain the wharf site operational in a stable, reliable condition and to make the improvements and upgrades required to extend the functional working life of the wharf till to 2050.
The scope of work goes through three stages:
• Preliminary historical documentation reviews • Site investigation – site condition surveys and evaluation of the wharf and adjacent area: o Structures inspection o Technical surveys (NDT) o Bathymetric surveys o Topographic surveys • Reports including observations, analysis, site drawings, recommendations for the existing conditions and cost estimates to upgrade the installations.
The Nanisivik wharf is located in the High Arctic on the southern shoreline of Strathcona Sound at the northern end of Baffin Island at approximately Latitude of 73 degrees North and Longitude of 84.5 degrees West. The wharf was built between March and August 1975 and consists of three circular flat steel sheet pile cells of about 21.3 m in diameter topped by a concrete cope wall. The distance between adjacent cell centres is about 38 m.
