Beauharnois Power Plant - Hydro-Québec, Beauharnois Québec

The Beauharnois Power Plant is located on the water-course of the St. Lawrence Seaway some 30 km West from Montreal city. The power house, build in 3 phases from the 1930’s, is composed of 36 operating units, 2 auxiliary turbines and 4 sluiceway gates. The Beauharnois Power plant was at the moment of its construction the largest power house of its kind in the world. Its actual production is now more than 1400 MW. In the context of a major rehabilitation program, Hydro-Quebec Civil Engineering Service mandated SPG Hydro International inc. to accomplish a complete investigation of most of the underwater civil and mechanic components of the installation. The mandate included : visual inspection, acoustic testing, verticality, horizontally and flatness measurement of embedded parts, flatness measurement on concrete surface, residual thickness measurement and dry loss evaluation, flow metering, sampling and analysis of concrete and steel specimen, video and photographic expertise and writing of several technical report. Our investigation program spread over 4 years starting from 1990 and the rehabilitation program is presently active since 1995. Beside this mandate, some investigation projects on zebra mussel populations were realized in the context of a new water intake for the cooling system. Following the remittance of our report, the project was revised and modified by the rehabilitation of the original cooling system.
