Champlain Bridge, Montreal

Champlain Bridge

The Champlain Bridge crosses the St.Lawrence River over more than 3 kilometers between Montreal island and the municipality of Brossard located on the South shore. The bridge is composed of more than 44 concrete piers in a flooded zone.
In the context of the pier inspection project of the Champlain, Jacques-Cartier and île-des-soeurs bridges, the Jacques-Cartier and Champlain Bridge Corporation mandated SPG Hydro International inc. in order to proceed with a complete underwater investigation. The mandate involved noting all technical information concerning the structural conditions of the bridge submerged elements. A comparative analysis was also carried out in relation with the inspection data of 1993 and the state of the repairs realized in the framework of the rehabilitation program established in 1990.
In a more specific way the mandate included : visual inspection of the submerged portion up to 2 m above the water line, acoustic testing, localization and characterization of the damages, video and photographic expertise, bathymetric survey on the periphery of the foundation and writing of a technical report. The first mandate was carried out in 1998.
SPG Hydro International inc. also realized different investigations of the Jacques-Cartier, Clement and Îles-des-Sœurs bridges from 1997 to 1998. Our company has been again selected for the next inspection project of the four bridges of the corporation in year 2002, 2004 and 2008.
