QIT Rio Tinto's Wharf - Sorel-Tracy

The QIT Rio Tinto Harbour is located on the South shore of the St.Lawrence River in the city of Tracy just upstream of the Richelieu River. The installation is composed of a loading dock of approximatively 305 meter constructed in 2 phases, 1950 and 1957.
The loading dock is a structure built with a sheet piling section of a 10 m exposed height of both Algoma C-14 ‘’U’’ shape and United State Steel MZ-38 ‘’Z’’ shape and a concrete cope wall of 4 m on top.
In the context of the monitoring and analysis program, QIT-Iron & Titane has mandated SPG Hydro International to put together the program in order to establish the residual time life of the structure and the rehabilitation program to expand its operation.
The survey program included the following : land and bathymetric survey, positioning of some structural components, visual inspection, acoustic testing, verticality measurement, residual thickness reading and dry loss evaluation, video and photographic expertise and technical report writing. The report also presented a structural analysis including the residual capacity, the life expectancy of the harbour and a rehabilitation program.
The mandate started in 1996. The monitoring program took place in 1999 and an enlargement project with dolphins took place in 2001.
