Deception Bay Wharf, Xstrata

The port facilities of the mining company Xstrata are located inside Deception Bay, south of the Hudson Strait at about 50 km East of the village of Saluit. The port facility (dock) is precisely on the West coast of the Bay, at longitude 71 41 '34'' West and latitude 62 08' 46'' North. Within the rehabilitation project of port facilities, SPG Hydro International Inc., in recent years has been given different mandates. The objective of the rehabilitation was to provide a safe and secure operation for the next 40 years.

SPG’s main interventions were : • 2003 : Inspection and structural analysis of the facilities. • 2004 : Design of a new transfer slab for the loading crane • 2006 : Consolidation of the cells in the tidal zone • 2007 : Underwater assistance during the new dock construction.

Our mandates were obtained either by the Engineering Department of the Company in order to proceed with technical expertise leading to an assessment of the residual life of the structures (2003 and 2004), or through a consultant ( 2006) or a contractor (2007).

The facilities consist of four circular cells as follows:
Cell 1: 136 piles Cell 2: 135 piles Cell 3: 134 piles Cell 4: 38 piles
The cells were built during the years 1971 and 1972 AND consisted of sheet pile wall (Arbed Belval BF 1-9.5).

The new construction now consists of three concrete caissons that were floated to the site with the use of submersible barges, sunk into place and then filled up with granular material exported via ore ship.
